Pliant Girls

The Design:

50 Sisters, 50 Brothers, one giant wedding. Five sisters are in front of the audience, telling their story and asking for help after murdering their betrothed.

The director approached me saying her ideal vibe is “ballet, but punk.” Something that should be beautiful, but overlaid with a sense of distortion, cacophonous noise over luscious harmonies. “Think Stravinksy’s Rite of Spring” she told me.

I created the world of these women with psychedelic rock. They told their stories supported by moments of piano melodies and fighting against the intrusive guitar riffs and drum patterns. A wild representation of the women fighting for their freedom amidst their many challenges.
